Preparing for your Session

WOO HOO! I'm so freakin' excited for our session together. Whether this is your first photoshoot or not, I'm here to guide you every step of the way on how to achieve the best possible results. You have probably already received my style guide that should help you pick out the best possible outfits, so this guide is ALL about preparing emotionally, mentally (a must for kids, seriously) and selecting the best location at the best time.

While these aren't rules, it is my hope that you've chosen to book me for photos because of my style of photography and that you trust how I enjoy to shoot. Photography is a two way street and I aim to create something beautiful with you, not for you.

Your moments matter

Today is going to feel like a blur by this time next year. I may be biased, but I can't stress enough how these images go way beyond what money can possibly buy. If you've ever had the privilege of stumbling on insanely old photographs of your grandparents as young adults, do you remember that amazing feeling of searching those faces and seeing traces of the people you know today? Seeing the way your mothers eyes light up as she gazes at a photo of you as a little baby, being held in her arms. That is priceless!

These photos are way more important than updating your facebook cover photo, or having content to post on Instagram.

They are your legacy.
Leading up to our session

• Mentally prepare your kids

Refer to me as a friend when talking to your kids about the shoot! Treat it as though you're all going to be doing something super fun that they can get excited about. I know that this is hard to do at times, especially if they've done photoshoots before, but it really really helps! All the adults involved need to be on board with this because as I'm sure you know, kids will feed off any energy around them.

• Resist the urge to pose

We've been trained since birth to stand tall, slap on a stiff grin, look at the camera and pose. We'll only be doing this for the first 5 minutes of our session. Nothing drains your energy more than posing and smiling in each and every shot. It's not a problem if you automatically move into a pose and look at me, but just be aware that I will be re-directing your attention to your partner or your kids.

• Don't panic

Sometimes I may fall quiet when I'm in the zone or trying to grab multiple angles of a shot, but please don't panic! It means you're doing everything right and I don't want you to stop. Similarly, if I ask you to do something again, it's not because you did anything wrong! I just freakin' loved it and want to make sure that I've really got that shot before moving on.

• Bring snacks

If you're a mother with littles, I'm sure I don't need to tell you to bring a bottle of water and some snacks. Not only is it helpful to have everyone fed and happy, but I'm a huge advocate for bribery. My son especially perks up right after having some chocolate so I'm with you!

If you've booked a couples session, the same applies. If you both really love pizza, we can even include it as a prop for the session! It would be such a great date night idea.

• Let things be

I can't tell you how many times I've showed up to a session where parents were stressed about their childs behaviour and felt that they needed to be calm and quiet. I don't know about you, but if I were to bring my sons to a large open field they would be the exact opposite of that and I LOVE it. My entire approach to family sessions is letting kids be kids and rolling with their quirky personalities. My goal is to capture who they are so that, years from now, you can look at these images and instantly be taken back to this brief time in their lives.

Locations & Times

Light matters

I tell all my clients that we won't be nailing down a time to meet until a few days prior to our session. The reason being that I will always ALWAYS try to shoot at the best possible time of day for the best light. This varies from location to location. If it's a clear day with blue skies, I will meet you an hour prior to sunset or 15 minutes prior to sunrise (these sessions are actually gorgeous so if you're down for this, let me know!) or I'll meet you in the afternoon on a cloudy day.

I can't tell you how many times I had shown up to a session on a clear, sunny day at 11AM and spent so much time making sure that we were in full shade and that nobody was being blasted in the face by the sun. I want majority of my focus to be on your connection, not the settings of my camera or making sure that there were no sun spots through the trees.

Favourite Locations

I prefer to shoot in large, grassy fields so that you have the freedom (and the privacy!) to roam around. This means I will be avoiding parks that get quite busy on weekends, or city areas for families. I'm totally fine shooting couples in a city-like setting, especially if there's special meaning, but will firmly advocate for a more private, open setting for families.

Some of my top faves include:
Aldergrove Regional Park
Campbell Valley Park
Colony Farms Regional Park
Blackie Spit
Lighthouse Park
Whytecliff Park

You are absolutely welcome to send me photos of my previous work if you like the setting/location and we can go from there!

Remember, it's not about getting those perfect photos where your chin is just a teeny tiny bit to the right. It's not about making you look like someone other than yourself where not a hair is out of place, and your kids are all standing still and grinning like pinterest models.

I'm there to capture who you are and what you're all about. All the in-between moments, big or small.
